Metal, plastic or wooden shed - which is best?

Metal sheds are secure and need little maintenance but can suffer condensation without ventilation. Plastic sheds never rot or need painting and are easy to assemble, though usually less secure. Wooden sheds look best and insulate better, but need treating every year or two.

Do I need a base for a garden shed?

Yes. A level, firm base - concrete, paving slabs or a plastic grid base with a membrane - is essential. Most manufacturer warranties require one, and a shed sitting directly on soil will draw up damp and distort the door frame.

Do I need planning permission for a shed?

In most cases a domestic shed falls under permitted development in England, provided it is single storey, sits behind the principal elevation and does not exceed the height limits for its position. Rules differ in conservation areas and listed properties, so check with your local council.

How do I stop condensation in a metal shed?

Ventilation is the main fix - keep the vents clear and do not block them with stored items. Raising the shed off damp ground, adding an insulating liner or vapour barrier, and avoiding storing wet tools inside all help.

How can I make a shed more secure?

Replace the supplied screws on hinges and hasps with coach bolts, fit a closed-shackle padlock, anchor the shed to its base, and obscure the windows so tools are not visible. Check your home insurance for what it requires for outbuilding cover.
