How to Strip and Reseed a Worn Out Lawn in the UK

Sometimes a lawn is so patchy, bumpy or weed-filled that regular feeding and mowing are not enough. In those cases, stripping back the worst of the old grass and reseeding can give you a fresh start without the cost of full turfing.

This guide walks through a practical renovation process that we use on real UK gardens – not just show lawns.

Step 1: Decide if full renovation is needed

Walk the lawn and ask yourself:

• Is there more bare soil, moss and weeds than grass?
• Are there deep dips and humps that make mowing awkward?
• Is the soil compacted and hard underfoot?

If the answer is "yes" to most of these, a proper strip and reseed is often more effective than endless patch repairs.

Step 2: Remove old growth and thatch

Start by cutting the lawn short and removing as much old material as possible.

• Mow on a lower setting than usual to take the top off the grass.
• Use a scarifier or spring-tine rake to pull out thatch and moss.
• On extremely poor lawns you may use a turf cutter or spade to strip back sections completely.
• Clear away all debris so you can see the soil surface.

Step 3: Level and improve the soil

A good seedbed is key to a smooth, healthy lawn.

• Loosen compacted areas with a fork or tiller to a few centimetres deep.
• Fill hollows with a mix of topsoil and sand; shave down high spots and blend them in.
• Rake the surface to a fine, even tilth, removing stones and large clumps.
• Lightly firm the ground with your feet or a roller, then rake again to break the crust.

Step 4: Choose the right seed mix

The best seed mix depends on how you use your lawn.

• Pick a hard-wearing mix with ryegrass for family lawns and pets.
• Choose shade-tolerant mixes for north-facing or tree-shaded areas.
• Use finer ornamental mixes only if you are prepared for extra maintenance.

Step 5: Sow the seed evenly

Sowing evenly helps avoid patchy results.

• Measure the lawn and follow the seed rate on the bag.
• Split the seed into two equal parts; sow one half in one direction and the other at right angles.
• Lightly rake or brush the seed so it just disappears into the surface.
• Consider covering small areas with fleece or netting to deter birds.

Step 6: Watering and early care

New seed must not be allowed to dry out repeatedly.

• Keep the surface lightly moist with gentle watering, especially in dry spells.
• Avoid heavy use of the lawn until the new grass has been cut two or three times.
• Make the first cut when the grass is around 5–7cm high, using a high setting.
