Get your patio clean with simple tools and solutions

You do not need a pressure washer to get a clean patio. With the right approach, a stiff brush and some elbow grease can achieve excellent results.

What you need

  • Stiff bristle brush or deck brush
  • Bucket
  • Watering can or hose
  • Cleaning solution (see below)
  • Rubber gloves

Basic cleaning method

  1. Sweep the patio to remove loose debris, leaves and dirt.
  2. Wet the surface with water.
  3. Apply your cleaning solution and leave for 10-15 minutes.
  4. Scrub with a stiff brush, working in sections.
  5. Rinse thoroughly with clean water.
  6. Repeat on stubborn areas if needed.

DIY cleaning solutions

For general dirt and algae:

Mix washing-up liquid with warm water (a good squirt per bucket). This is gentle and effective for regular cleaning.

For algae and moss:

Mix one part white vinegar to four parts water. Vinegar is mildly acidic and kills algae. Avoid using on limestone or other acid-sensitive stone.

For stubborn stains:

Make a paste of bicarbonate of soda and water. Apply to stains, leave for 15 minutes, then scrub and rinse.

For heavy algae and black spots:

Use a proprietary patio cleaner containing bleach or sodium hypochlorite. Follow the product instructions carefully and protect nearby plants.

Removing specific stains

  • Oil and grease: Cover with cat litter or sand to absorb, then scrub with washing-up liquid.
  • Rust: Use a rust remover product or try lemon juice and salt.
  • Bird droppings: Soak with water, then scrub with soapy water.
  • Moss in joints: Scrape out with an old knife or patio knife, then treat with moss killer.

Tips for better results

  • Clean on a dry day so the patio dries quickly afterwards.
  • Work in sections so the cleaning solution does not dry out before you scrub.
  • Use a long-handled brush to save your back.
  • Rinse thoroughly – leftover cleaning solution can leave marks.

Preventing future build-up

  • Sweep regularly to prevent debris accumulating.
  • Trim back overhanging plants that shade the patio and encourage algae.
  • Apply a patio sealer after cleaning to protect the surface.
  • Treat with algae preventer in autumn before the wet season.

Caution: Never mix bleach with vinegar or other acids – it creates toxic fumes. Use one or the other, not both.
