Understanding slope ratings (and what they really mean)

Manufacturers usually give a maximum slope as either a percentage, degrees or both. Common figures you will see are:

  • 25 percent or so: fine for most gentle banks.
  • 35 percent: better for steeper areas.
  • Higher ratings on premium machines for really challenging slopes.

These ratings usually apply to the areas inside the boundary, not right on the wire or edge. If your steepest point is at the edge of a drop, you may need to pull the boundary slightly away from it.

Traction, tyres and wet British grass

In Staffordshire we see plenty of wet lawns. For slopes and awkward patches we look for:

  • Deep tread tyres or optional high grip wheel kits.

  • Accept that you may still want to run a quick strimmer around the edges every week or two.

Many UK houses have a narrow path or side return between the front and back garden, or a small patch of grass around the side of the house.

Will a robot mower fall off a steep edge?
If the boundary wire or virtual fence is placed sensibly and the slope is within the rated limit, the mower should not drive off the edge. For very steep drops, we normally pull the boundary further back and leave a short strip to be trimmed manually.
Can I use a robot mower on a terraced garden?
It depends on how the levels connect. If the terraces are linked by ramps a mower can climb, you may be able to treat it as one lawn. If there are steps between levels, you will usually need to treat each terrace as a separate area or stick with a traditional mower.
What happens if the mower keeps slipping in one area?
