Stack it off the ground on bearers or a rack, with gaps between rows so air can move through. Cover the top to keep rain off but leave the sides open - fully wrapping a stack traps moisture and slows drying considerably.

Most species need 12 to 24 months split and stacked under cover. Softwoods dry faster than dense hardwoods such as oak. The aim is a moisture content below 20 per cent rather than a fixed length of time.

A roof or top cover is important to keep rain off, but the sides should stay open. A sheltered, breezy position does far more for drying than an enclosed store, which can hold damp air around the wood.

A spot that gets sun and moving air, on hard standing rather than soil. Leaving a gap behind the store rather than pushing it flat against a wall lets air circulate and avoids trapping damp against the brickwork.

Split a log and test the freshly exposed face with a moisture meter - readings taken on the outside of a log are misleadingly low. Below 20 per cent is ready to burn; wetter wood produces less heat and far more soot.
