Tonnage is the force the ram applies. As a rough guide, 5-7 tons handles softwood and rounds up to around 25cm; 10-15 tons copes with most seasoned hardwood; 20 tons and above is for large, knotty or green hardwood. Going bigger than you need mainly costs money and weight.

Electric splitters are quieter, produce no fumes and can be used in a garage or outbuilding, but need a mains supply. Petrol models are portable and generally more powerful, but must be used outdoors and need more maintenance. For domestic firewood, electric is usually the practical choice.

For small volumes, kindling and occasional use they work well - there is no fuel or power needed, they are quiet and they cost far less. They are slower and more physical, so they suit people splitting a few bags rather than a winter supply.

Horizontal models are fine when you can comfortably lift the log onto the beam. Vertical models let you stand heavy rounds on the ground and split them without lifting, which matters once logs get above roughly 20kg.

Keep both hands clear of the wedge and never let a second person feed logs while you operate the control. Wear eye protection and gloves, work on firm level ground, and never try to clear a jammed log while the ram is under pressure.
