Cordless Trimmer For Box Hedges

Blade length determines how much you can cut in one pass. For small hedges under 1m wide, a 45-50cm blade is sufficient. Medium hedges (1-1.5m) suit 55-60cm blades. Large, established hedges benefit from 65cm+ blades. Longer isn't always better - shorter blades are lighter and easier to control for detailed work.

Most hedges need trimming 2-3 times per year: late spring (May-June), mid-summer (July-August), and early autumn (September). Fast-growing hedges like privet may need monthly trimming during growing season. Avoid trimming during bird nesting season (March-August) if birds are present.

Single-sided blades cut in one direction and are better for shaping and detailed work. Double-sided blades cut in both directions, making them faster for general trimming and ideal for the tops of hedges. Most gardeners prefer double-sided for versatility.

Modern cordless trimmers can cut branches up to 25-30mm thick. Check the 'cutting capacity' specification. For thicker branches, you'll need loppers or a pruning saw. Forcing thick branches through a trimmer damages the blades and motor.

Clean blades after each use with a dry cloth to remove sap and debris. Apply light machine oil or blade lubricant every few uses. Sharpen blades annually or when cutting becomes ragged. Store in a dry place with blade guard fitted.
